The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy convened a National Seminar on Poultry and Pig Production at the Goodwill Parish Hall, drawing stakeholders from across the livestock sector to exchange ideas on strengthening local production.
The seminar, held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, formed part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to bolster food security and agricultural output in Dominica. It brought together farmers, producers, technical officers and other industry participants to discuss practical strategies for improving the poultry and pig sub-sectors.
Livestock production has long been identified as a critical pillar of Dominica's agricultural economy, contributing to rural livelihoods and reducing reliance on imported meats. The seminar provided a platform for stakeholders to share experiences, identify challenges and propose solutions to enhance productivity and competitiveness.

Access to reliable agricultural labour has been highlighted as a significant challenge affecting farmers and national efforts to increase food production. Through the Government's existing migrant farm labour programme, approximately 189 migrant workers have entered Dominica, benefiting 47 farmers, according to Agriculture Minister Roland Royer. The Minister has emphasised that migrant workers are not intended to replace Dominican workers but rather to fill labour gaps where sufficient local labour is unavailable.
Minister Royer has also pointed to the need for a broader transformation of the agricultural sector through increased mechanisation, greater use of technology and the creation of more opportunities for young Dominicans to see agriculture as a viable and attractive livelihood. He has stressed the importance of a system that is clear, coordinated, accountable and responsive to the needs of all farmers while protecting the rights and welfare of workers.
The seminar on poultry and pig production aligns with these wider policy objectives, as the Ministry seeks to strengthen the integration of labour, technology and best practices across the sector. Stakeholders at the Goodwill Parish Hall had the opportunity to examine production strategies and contribute to the national dialogue on agricultural development.
