Dominica is preparing to welcome 475,521 cruise passengers during the 2026-2027 cruise season, which officially opens on Thursday, 8 October. Tourism Minister Denise Charles-Pemberton announced the figure and the start date in a statement on Wednesday, describing the coming season as one of significant opportunity for the island.
The minister said there is much to look forward to as the new season gets under way, pointing to the expected volume of visitors as a boost for the local economy. Cruise tourism is a major pillar of Dominica's visitor industry, bringing passengers directly into Roseau and other ports where they engage with tour operators, taxi drivers, vendors, restaurants and craft producers.
The 475,521 passengers expected over the season represent a substantial flow of arrivals across the months ahead. Each call brings spending into the local economy through organised tours to sites such as the Boiling Lake, Trafalgar Falls, the Waitukubuli National Trail and the island's dive sites, as well as direct purchases from market vendors and shops in the capital.
Minister Charles-Pemberton's announcement gives stakeholders across the tourism sector a clear picture of the season ahead. Hotels, guest houses, tour companies, transport providers and vendors in Roseau and Portsmouth can now plan staffing, supplies and services around the expected schedule of calls.
The start of the season on 8 October places Dominica within the wider Caribbean cruise calendar, when regional destinations begin receiving ships for the winter months. For a small island economy, the cruise sector supports employment and small business activity in communities beyond the capital, including in the Kalinago Territory and along the west coast.
Officials have consistently linked cruise arrivals to the broader tourism product, which also includes stay-over visitors, eco-tourism and the island's reputation as the Nature Isle. The minister's statement framed the season as a moment of anticipation, with the government and industry partners preparing to host the passengers expected from October onwards.
Further details of the season's schedule, including individual ship calls and any special arrangements for the opening period, are expected to be released by the relevant authorities as 8 October approaches. For now, the confirmed figure of 475,521 passengers sets the scale of what lies ahead for Dominica's cruise industry.
