Dominicans across the island joined in the annual National Day of Prayer and Fasting on Friday, with churches in Roseau, Portsmouth and rural communities holding special services and observances throughout the day.
The Dominica Council of Churches coordinated the programme, which is observed each year as a period of reflection and national unity. Services were held at several places of worship, and many businesses and government offices adjusted their schedules to allow staff and members of the public to take part.
In the capital, a midday service at the Roseau Cathedral drew worshippers from across the city and surrounding areas. Similar gatherings were reported in Portsmouth, Marigot, La Plaine and the Kalinago Territory, where church leaders led prayers for the nation, its leaders and its people.
The observance comes as Dominica continues to manage the challenges of the hurricane season and broader economic pressures. Church leaders used the occasion to call for unity and to encourage citizens to remain vigilant and supportive of one another.
«We are one people, and this day reminds us of the strength we draw from faith and from each other,» a church leader said during the Roseau service, according to organisers.
The National Day of Prayer and Fasting is not a public holiday, but it is widely respected across the island. Schools, some private businesses and public offices observed adjusted hours, while essential services continued as normal.
Organisers said the day was also an opportunity to pray for those affected by natural disasters in the region and for the continued recovery and development of Dominica.
Members of the public who could not attend services were encouraged to observe a period of quiet reflection at home or at work. The Council of Churches said it was grateful for the cooperation of the government, the private sector and the public in making the day a success.
Further community services are expected in some parishes over the weekend, though the main national observances concluded on Friday.
