Children in Morne Jaune now have a new place to play, exercise and spend time together following the official opening of a playground at the Morne Jaune Primary School.
The project was completed by the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, which has now delivered its sixth playground in Dominica. The club said the facility is intended to give pupils a safe and dedicated space for recreation during and outside school hours.
The opening was marked with a ceremony at the school, where members of the Rotary Club of Portsmouth joined staff, students and residents of the Morne Jaune community. The club has made playground construction a central part of its service work, with the Morne Jaune project following five earlier installations in other communities.
Playgrounds are seen as an important part of primary education in Dominica, giving children room for physical activity and social interaction that supports their health and development. For smaller villages, a school playground often serves as a shared community space as well.
The Rotary Club of Portsmouth has not yet said where its next playground project will be located. The club's work is carried out by volunteers and supported by fundraising and donations, and it has previously partnered with schools and community groups on similar initiatives.
Morne Jaune is a village in the south-east of Dominica, and the primary school serves children from the surrounding area. The new playground is expected to be used by pupils during school hours and by young people in the community at other times.
The official opening was attended by representatives of the Rotary Club of Portsmouth and the school, who thanked those involved in completing the project. The club said it remains committed to projects that benefit young people and communities across Dominica.
