The Electoral Commission has announced that the confirmation period for voters will not be extended beyond Wednesday, ending speculation that the deadline might be pushed back. Chief Elections Officer Anthea Joseph said the Commission adopted the position at its last meeting, and the exercise will close as scheduled.

Joseph explained that the decision was taken to ensure the voters' list is finalised in time for upcoming electoral processes. She urged all eligible voters who have not yet confirmed their registration to do so before the deadline, warning that failure to confirm could affect their ability to vote in future elections.

The confirmation exercise, which allows registered voters to verify and update their details, is a key part of the Commission's preparations for the next general election. The Commission has been conducting the exercise across all constituencies, with mobile teams visiting communities to facilitate the process. Joseph noted that turnout has been steady but emphasised that more work remains to reach voters in remote areas.

Opposition figures had earlier called for an extension, citing logistical challenges and the impact of recent weather events. However, the Commission maintained that the timeline must be adhered to in order to meet statutory requirements. Joseph said the Commission is committed to a transparent and efficient process, and that all necessary resources have been deployed to assist voters.

Voters who have not yet confirmed their registration are advised to visit the nearest Electoral Commission office or designated confirmation centre before the close of business on Wednesday. The Commission has also reminded the public that confirmation can be done online through the official portal, though those requiring assistance should visit in person.

The Electoral Commission will publish the final voters' list after the confirmation period ends. Joseph said the list will be available for public inspection, and any discrepancies should be reported immediately. She reiterated that the Commission's goal is to ensure every eligible Dominican can exercise their democratic right.

With the deadline looming, the Commission is urging community leaders and civil society groups to help spread the word, particularly in rural and Kalinago communities. The outcome of this exercise will shape the electoral roll for the next polls, making participation crucial for all citizens.
