Dominica's Olympic champion Thea LaFond-Gadson has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) by The University of the West Indies in recognition of her outstanding contribution to sport.

The honour places the triple jumper among 13 honorary graduands selected by the regional university for 2026. The award was conferred through the UWI Five Islands Campus, extending recognition that reaches across the Caribbean community the university serves.

LaFond-Gadson became a national and regional sporting icon when she won gold for Dominica, a achievement that carried particular weight for a small island state competing on the world stage. Her success has been celebrated across the Nature Isle and among the diaspora, and the honorary doctorate adds an academic distinction to a career already marked by athletic excellence.

The University of the West Indies has a long tradition of recognising individuals whose work has shaped Caribbean life, and the inclusion of a Dominican sportswoman in its 2026 cohort reflects the standing her achievements have earned beyond the track. Honorary graduands are chosen for their contribution to their field and to the region, and LaFond-Gadson's recognition sits alongside that of other distinguished recipients named for the year.

For Dominica, the award is a further point of pride in a sporting story that has drawn attention to the island's athletes and to the role of sport in national life. The Five Islands Campus, based in Antigua and Barbuda, is one of UWI's newer campuses, and its conferral of the degree links Dominica's Olympic achievement to the wider Eastern Caribbean.

Details of the full list of 13 honorary graduands for 2026 and the timing of the formal conferral were not immediately available. Further information on the ceremony is expected from the university in due course.
