Eight aspiring entrepreneurs have presented their business proposals before a panel of judges as part of the 2026 Business Plan Innovation Award, organised by the Dominica Youth Business Trust. The presentations mark a key stage in the competition, which is designed to support young Dominicans seeking to turn business ideas into viable enterprises.
The event brought the eight finalists together to pitch their plans and compete for top honours. Each entrepreneur outlined a business concept before the judging panel, which will assess the proposals on criteria including feasibility, innovation and potential contribution to the local economy.
The Business Plan Innovation Award is one of the trust's flagship programmes for encouraging enterprise among young people. By requiring participants to develop a full business plan, the initiative pushes aspiring owners to think through their markets, costs and growth prospects before launching.
The Dominica Youth Business Trust has long worked to provide training, mentorship and access to finance for young entrepreneurs. Its programmes are intended to help small businesses get off the ground and create employment in communities across the island, from Roseau to Portsmouth and the rural parishes.
Small and medium-sized enterprises remain central to Dominica's economy, alongside agriculture, fisheries, tourism and the emerging geothermal energy sector. Support for young business owners is seen as one way to diversify livelihoods and build resilience, particularly in the wake of major storms that have tested the island's economic base.
The eight finalists now await the judges' decision. The winner of the 2026 award will receive support intended to help move the winning plan from proposal to operation, in line with the trust's mandate to foster a new generation of Dominican entrepreneurs.
