St Lucia has launched a US$22.83 million project aimed at making the country's water supply more reliable and reducing disruptions caused by ageing infrastructure. The initiative, formally known as the Ninth Water Project and also called the John Compton Dam Raw Water Pipeline Replacement Project, was announced by the St Lucian government as a major investment in the island's water sector.

The project centres on replacing the raw water pipeline at the John Compton Dam, a critical piece of infrastructure that conveys untreated water from the dam to treatment facilities. According to officials, the existing pipeline has deteriorated over years of service, leading to frequent breaks and supply interruptions that affect households, businesses and essential services across St Lucia.

The new pipeline is expected to improve the reliability of water delivery and reduce the volume of non-revenue water lost through leaks. The US$22.83 million investment covers the procurement and installation of replacement pipeline, as well as associated engineering works. The project is being implemented as the ninth in a series of water sector improvement programmes undertaken by the St Lucian authorities.

Water supply disruptions have been a recurring concern in St Lucia, particularly during dry periods when demand rises and system losses compound the problem. The replacement of the raw water pipeline is intended to address one of the most vulnerable links in the supply chain, from the dam to the treatment plant.

Residents and businesses in areas served by the John Compton Dam are expected to see gradual improvements in supply as sections of the new pipeline are commissioned. Until the works are complete, the utility may continue to schedule maintenance outages and advise customers to store water where possible.
