The Pesticide Control Board within the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy is joining the international community in observing Pesticide Awareness Day on Monday, September 28, 2026, with a renewed call for safer handling and responsible use of pesticides across Dominica.
The observance places particular emphasis on reducing the risks associated with Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs), which pose significant dangers to human health and the environment when not managed properly. The Ministry is urging not only farmers and farming communities but also households, businesses and other sectors to review how pesticides are used and stored.
As part of its message, the Ministry is encouraging farmers to explore safer and more sustainable approaches, including Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This method promotes a combination of techniques to manage pests while reducing reliance on chemical pesticides, offering a more environmentally sound path for local agriculture.
Food security remains a priority for Dominica, and the Ministry says producing safe, wholesome food is central to achieving that goal. The continued collaboration with the Dominica Bureau of Standards to conduct periodic testing of fresh produce for pesticide residues is a key part of these efforts. These tests help determine whether residue levels remain within established Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for safe consumption and support compliance for export markets.
The Ministry is also working with farmers, importers, retailers and other stakeholders involved in pesticide management to strengthen awareness, promote responsible use and provide training on safer alternatives and practices. The Pesticide Control Board says it remains committed to protecting consumers and supporting the production of safe food for both domestic consumption and export.
Pesticide Awareness Day is observed internationally to highlight the dangers of highly hazardous pesticides and to advocate for safer alternatives. In Dominica, the day serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility among all users to protect public health and the environment.
