More than 20 farmers involved in banana and plantain production in Dominica’s Southeast Agricultural Region have completed a hands-on training programme aimed at improving farm safety and operational practices. The session was held at the La Plaine Agricultural Training Centre and forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the island’s key agricultural sector.
The training gave participants practical experience in modern cultivation techniques, with an emphasis on safety measures that reduce the risk of injury and improve efficiency in the field. Organisers designed the programme to address common challenges faced by banana and plantain growers, from land preparation and planting methods to the safe handling of tools and equipment.
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of the Dominican economy, and banana production in particular has long been a mainstay for rural communities along the east coast. The Southeast Agricultural Region, which includes areas such as La Plaine and surrounding villages, is one of the principal banana-growing zones on the island. Programmes such as this are intended to help farmers maintain productivity while meeting the quality standards expected by local and export markets.
Participants were drawn from across the region and included both established growers and younger farmers entering the sector. The practical format allowed them to work directly with trainers in the field, rather than relying solely on classroom instruction.
