The community of Penville is mourning the passing of Mary Valerie, better known as Say-Say or Ma Martin, who died at her residence at the age of 92. A beloved matriarch of Delaford, she is remembered across the northern villages for her long life and deep family ties.
Mrs Valerie was preceded in death by her husband, Elie Martin Valerie. She leaves behind a large family, including her children Joseph Powell, Camille, Allan, Sylvester, Joseph and Roselyn Valerie, Morine Laville, and Louise Athline Maloone, as well as an adopted daughter, Veronica Daniel.
Her grandchildren include Irvin Valerie, Anne-Marie Lewis, Marsha and Marshall Maloone, Royena Marcellin, Johnsia and Joania Laville, and Annisa, Craig, Camron, Charmaine and Jemima Valerie. She also leaves great-grandchildren Élise and Gabrielle Valerie, Nayah Esprit, Jaylon Boston and Jerzel Lamothe.
Her sisters Felixia Birmingham, Martha and Bernadine Marcellin also survive her, along with daughters-in-law Constance Seaman, Wendy Valerie, Elma Victor and Virgin Powell, and son-in-law Delvin Maloone. Brothers-in-law Edrick and Ferdinand Valerie, and other in-laws Affina Valerie, Garth Esprit and Jenner Boston, are also among the mourners.
A wide circle of nieces and nephews, including Gretta, Alex, Ambrose and Royston Birmingham, Vener Seaman, Dr Krystal Williams, Michael Gage, Vernant Douglas, Judy and Cheryl Charles, and many others, will remember her fondly. The family has also acknowledged Pastor Lewis Romain, Florence Lewis, and numerous close relatives and friends across Penville and beyond.
The family has expressed gratitude to the Penville St Vincent De Paul Society, the Gilbert, Marcellin and Ettienne families, and the extended community of Penville for their support. Other relatives and friends too numerous to mention have also been remembered in the family's announcement.
The funeral service for the late Mary Valerie will be held on Saturday 5th September 2026 at the Vielle Case Catholic Church. Viewing will begin at 1:00 pm, with the service following at 1:30 pm. Interment will take place afterwards at the Vielle Case Catholic Cemetery.
